KAN
- These people are learning a kan ha diskan, a call and response song in Breton, the Celtic language spoken in Brittany, France. The recording was made on 03/07/2019 in a class at le Conservatoire de musiques et d’art dramatique de Quimper (CMAD), an art and music school in Quimper, Brittany.
- At the beginning you are hearing “l’appel,” or “the call.” A loosely structured, slower version of the song’s melody sung without words, usually employing the syllables lalalelo or tralalaléno. From l’appel the song leader (kaner) moves into the the true tempo and rhythm of the song, followed by the other singers (diskaner).
- Nearly every Breton song or tune has an accompanying dance. To this song one would dance the plinn.
